Greece 2018

Lake Kerkini - 29th January - 4th February 2018

Purley Pelicans photography workshop at Lake Kerkini in northern Greece, consisted of a 5-day all-included package organised by George S. Blonsky. The workshop comprised 3-days photographing Dalmatian Pelicans and 2-days return transport to Thessaloniki airport.  There was plenty of time allowed during each photography session which  consisted of  3-half day's from a boat on the lake and 3-half day's from the shoreline. Each session started either early morning or ended late afternoon to make the most of the best light conditions. For our visit we arranged an extra 2-days to look for Lesser White-fronted Geese that overwinter in the area.

The main reason to visit Lake Kerkini at this time of the year is to photograph Dalmatian Pelican’s that are at their most stunning in breeding plumage and particularly with their bright orange bill pouch. In addition to the hundreds of Dalmatian, several Great White Pelican's were present and thousands of water birds including various duck species, two cormorant species and Greater Flamingos. In addition to the Lesser White-fronted Goose flock, a Red-breasted Goose, several Greater Spotted Eagles, European Wild Cat and Golden Jackel's were also seen during the extra 2-day excursions. This well organised venue can be thoroughly recommended and the 3-day Purely Pelicans workshop, photographing in different light and weather conditions, was over all to soon.
